Visiting the yaks

From late October to mid-June, the yaks are most of their time grazing around the "Yak shu lo ché" farm in the hamlet of La Giette above Les Haudères and can usually be easily observed from the hiking trail.

Please note that access by car to the hamlet of La Giette is only permitted for chalet owners. So plan a nice walk to come and see the yaks. From the small car park at Les Farqueses on the road to Arolla, La Giette is about a 30-minute walk away. You can enjoy a beautiful walk by continuing from La Giette through the forest to the hamlet of Arbey (45 min) or down to Evolène (60 min).

Please note: access in winter can be difficult and even dangerous when there is a lot of snow, so it is recommended that you check before setting off.

If you would like to meet them up close and learn more about yaks in general and the yaks of La Giette in particular, Rosula offers guided tours to meet the yaks on request. She will welcome you to the farm and, over a cup of tea, tell you about the yaks and the history of yaks in Switzerland. Then you will go to see the herd with her. She will introduce you to each yak and its story and show you how to approach them. If you wish, you can brush a yak and, above all, spend a quiet moment contemplating the atmosphere of the herd.
